The first thing I remember sewing was a wedding dress for a peg doll. I sewed the train to the wrong side of the dress which gave me a bit of a problem, but then I was only 6 at the time! I can’t remember a time from that point on when I wasn’t sewing, knitting, crocheting or otherwise creating something. Textiles have always been my passion and I have my Nan to thank for that.
After fifteen years of study and hard work perfecting my art my career in Textiles was short lived. Sadly the decline of the Textile industry in the UK in favour of cheap overseas production saw me take my transferrable skills as a Quality Manager into the construction industry.
Nine years later, in 2009 I made a gift for my best friend's newborn baby daughter. Much to my surprise, it was received with overwhelming enthusiasm for its individuality. When I dug a little deeper I found widespread frustration at the shortage of unique gifts available in the baby market.
Armed with my degree in textile design and 12 years experience working at the centre of big businesses, I decided to merge my passion with my profession and set out on a mission: to offer an alternative to mass production by creating high quality baby accessories handmade in the UK. Handmade Baby was born
My company ethics reflect the values that are important to me. I am passionate about a return to some old fashioned values where:
• Children are taught skills that will last them a lifetime, like knitting and sewing;
• We buy things that are not only beautiful but that are going to last;
• Communities support one another and the small businesses within them;
• We consider the environment before buying something that’s been air freighted;
• We think about the conditions in which the things we buy have been made;
In short, I aim to run a socially responsible business mindful of 21st Century concerns.
All my products are hand crafted from high quality materials. Care and attention to detail ensure that each item, like your baby, is unique and individual. I hope you enjoy your purchases as much as I've enjoyed creating them!
